Battery Maintainer vs. Trickle Charger

Im not sure how long ago I wrote my previous review but it must be at least four years. Two or three times a year I test the system by unplugging the Battery Tender and run my ham radio off the battery for five or six days. Each time the battery behaves as if its still new. If my Battery Tender ever gives out, I will purchase a new one! Was this review helpful? By Cas This is a sweet little charger. I use it to charge my small portable sealed lead acid batteries, as well as the 12 volt deep cycle batteries I have for emergency use. One day decided to give a 12V Porter Cable Ni-Cad battery pack a last chance before getting rid of it. The battery did not hold a charge after the Porter Cable charger said it was fully charged.

For the very frugal, or if you’re on a tight budget, a cheap battery charger will work to charge your battery. They can be just a little slow, and you need to pay attention to disconnect it when it’s finished. For a little more money you get faster charging, but you still need to be there to disconnect it at the proper time. For more money you can have very fast charging and some nice additional features, like high current engine cranking, deep cycle charging, trickle charging, automatic shutoff, and long term battery maintaining.

While you may not need all of these features, the higher output units will have more whistles and bells.

I assume the centre contact is positive? AdrianS ” I assume the centre contact is positive? A plain trickle charger will put a continuous charge on the battery and if left in place for long periods of time can over charge the battery and eventually boil off the electrolyte. A battery conditioner on the other hand, will trickle charge the battery to full charge, then turn off, letting the charge drop down to a preset level, at which point it starts charging again.

A trickle charger is a simple charger that charges the battery slowly. Both the trickle charger and the float charger are 12 v battery chargers that charge the battery at the same rate that it self-discharges. Thread Starter Battery Trickle Charger pre-wiring install For our friends that have long winters or those who store their vehicles, who wish to have a battery trickle charger while the vehicle “hibernates”, this thread is for you. I also decided to install the ring mount pre-wiring that came with the battery charger as I didn’t want to deal with the battery clamps. Below is a pix of the completed pre-wire install: The blue arrows point to the negative wire. This has been threaded through an unused rubber grommet in the firewall to the battery compartment, highlighted by purple circle and routed to one of the factory ground in the engine compartment the bolt is highlighted by a round orange circle in the pix to the right.

The negative wire is also anchored by plastic tie and covered with soft rubber at this junction green circle. The covered connector for the trickle charger is highlighted by the yellow circle to the left of the pix. This connector may be threaded out the vent at the front side of the battery cover if so desired. I probably will tuck this near the vent so that it is easy to locate and fish out with one hand.

If not the battery cover is easy to remove anyways just turn the three twist anchors 90 degress to release, one in front and two in the rear. Make sure to insulate the ratchet wrench while working to loosen the bolt at the positive terminal of the car battery. I used a small PVC tube that fits into the handle of the wrench.

The small size of the VT DC battery leaves little power reserve and cold starting can be a potential issue. Combine that with the long recharge time of a wet cell battery and you could find yourself with battery troubles if you don’t regularly trickle charge. Short trips are not enough to recharge a heavily discharged battery.

Also, it not safe or in any way good practice just to put both of the charger cables directly onto the battery terminals. This is the safe way to do it: Then clip the -ve cable to a good “Ground” point somewhere on the vehicle’s bodywork, at least a yard or a metre away from the battery. When you want to remove the cable, do this: Always for safety sake!!!!! Wear safety googles and cover exposed skin before putting any battery on a charger, with that being said be sure to put the positive red or larger terminal on first, then clip on the negative black or smaller terminal last, also to avoid sparks and possible explosion of the battery acid in your face etc.

Try to be charging in a well ventilated area to help avoid the possibility of explosive fumes meeting up with unexpected sparks Work smart, work safely!!! More details Each type of battery charger is different, they are not all the same. Each unit should come with a set of instructions specific to that model and also some important safety precautions.

First check fluid level in battery. Then with charger turned off, connect positive cable, the red one to the positive side of the battery. Then connect negative charger cable the black one to the negative, ground side of the battery.

Slow, Charge and Discharging The storage capacity of a lead-acid automotive type battery is not fixed, but varies according to how slowly the battery is discharged. Similarly, the charge capacity of a battery is not fixed, but varies on how slowly a battery is charged. With batteries, the slower the charge the better! When a battery is charged or discharged, this initially affects only the chemicals closest to the gap between the battery plates and the electrolyte.

Fast Charging Not the best for a battery If a battery has been completely discharged e. Because after a few hours this charge will spread to the volume of the plates and electrolyte, resulting in a charge that may be so low as to be incapable of starting a vehicle. One of the byproducts of Gassing are Oxygen and Hydrogen. As the battery heats up, the gassing rate increases as well and it becomes increasingly likely that the Hydrogen around it will explode.

Slow Charging Best for the battery On the other hand, if the battery is given a SLOW charge using a low-amperage float charger, the charge will certainly take longer, but the battery will become more fully charged. During a slow charge, the charge current has time to distribute to the entire volume of the plates and electrolyte, while continuously being replenished by the battery float charger. Fast Discharge A similar occurrence happens when a battery is quickly discharged.

Eventually, the battery dies – so it appears.

Basic Repair Techniques and Practices Intro: One of the most important decisions you will have to make when attempting a repair to your bikes electrical system or when making a modification is whether to use crimp-on connectors or whether to solder the wires. Both have their good points and their bad ones. On American Chopper, you see Vinnie wiring up a new machine and he pulls the wires through the frame and makes all the connections with solder and seals them with shrink wrap.

The BT Plus uses micro-processor technology in a four stage charging profile to charge, improve, and float your battery so it is ready when your are. Constant current charging and regulated voltage patterns allow the battery to be recharged fully and safely without the fear of overcharging. It is not only able to charge any volt lead-acid battery, its specially adjusted internal software allows for a slightly lowered voltage level that protects sensitive Gel Cell batteries from the dangers of overcharging.

It is also designed to be easy to use in difficult spaces, to utilize a 4-step charging program and safely function in a fully automatic mode. The 4-step charge cycle detailed. What’s a Gel Cell? Micro-cracks form in this gelled electrolyte that provide paths for the oxygen recombination reactions between the positive and negative plates. The recharge voltages on this type of cell are lower than the other styles of lead acid battery making it probably the most sensitive cell in terms of adverse reactions to over-voltage charging, and thus needing special care.

Like all Battery Tender chargers, at the end of the regular charger cycle it automatically switches its output voltage to a safe, storage or float level which eliminates the need to worry about the damaging effects of overcharging, and the resulting need to check on the condition of the battery.

How to Use a Car Battery Charger

If we have a maHr battery, we would charge it at 60 ma for 10 to 12 hours. If we had a 60 AHr battery we would charge it at 6 amps for 10 to 12 hours. Needless to say, most lead acid charges are of the “dump-as-much-as-you-can-as-fast-as-you-can” variety. This type of charging is ok for liquid lead acid batteries but not for NiCds or for Gel Cells. While Gel Cells can handle much more recharge current than NiCds they can not handle as much as liquid lead acid.

Using a trickle charger, rather than allowing the battery to completely lose its charge, will help prolong the life of the battery. Attaching Harness or lead to Battery Access the motorcycle’s battery using the procedure outlined in your motorcycle owner’s manual or service manual.

For many who have these types of vehicles, they are rarely used, or not used as often as one would like. As a battery discharges, sulfation can begin to form. Sulfation is a build-up that takes place internally, on the plates of the battery. When a battery is charged, either on a trickle charger, or by a built in charging system, sulfation is knocked off the plate walls.

Over time, more and more sulfation will stick to the walls, which takes away from the capacity of the battery, and can cause premature failure. If the battery being used is a maintenance style battery with removable caps the water level must be checked periodically. If the water level falls below the plates, sulfation buildup on the cell walls will increase exponentially. The best defense against sulfation is to keep the battery from self-discharging. Now if the vehicle is being used every single day, it is being charged by the built in charger on the vehicle.

However, if the vehicle sits for 2 days or more at a time, it is best to use a Battery Maintainer for optimal life. Our battery maintainer , pictured above, is a fully automatic, 1. A cable with a small lead is connected to the battery permanently, when your ready to ride, simply pull the cable apart and take off.
